The Corvallis City Council tentatively made the decision at a virtual meeting on Monday to ask the voters whether the council and mayor should receive a monthly paycheck.
The proposed monthly stipend recommended for council members is $225, $275 for Council Vice President, and $325 for Council President. Currently, Mayor Biff Traber receives a stipend of $100 per month.
At the council’s Nov. 22 meeting, the council accepted the recommendations of the Mayor and Council Compensation Task Force which was created in August and is charged with providing a recommendation on two questions:
- Should the Mayor and City Council receive some form of compensation for their service, and;
- If the answer to the first question is ‘yes’, what should the compensation be?
The annual budget impact, if adopted, is anticipated to be close to $30,000 per year, according to meeting minutes from the task force.
The deadline to put it before the voters is fast approaching. The Council would need to have the measure ready by February in order to get it on the May ballot.
