How to Beat Record Gas Prices

Maybe by now you’ve all made adjustments to your gas consumption since prices have gone up in March. Or…more likely, you haven’t.

Despite May being National Bike Month and Oregon gas prices hitting a record high, May has been a rainy month with bus schedules being at times iffy, so finding alternative transportation might be a little harder to swallow.

For those who just can’t kick the car habit, here are a few tips:

  • Gas Buddy, a national app that has saved “more than $3 billion by providing real-time gas price information at 150,000+ stations,” helps you find the lowest gas prices in the area.
  • Mondays are the best days to fill up, because higher prices tend to hit later in the week.
  • There’s still time to participate in Bike to Work Week, May 16–22. According to the League of American Bicyclists, which has given Corvallis a Gold Rating for cycling, “40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around.”

According to the AAA, gas prices in Benton County were $4.67, about $0.20 above the national average, but $0.20 below the Oregon average, as of May 12.
