A Quick CPD Overview

Corvallis Chief of Police Nick Hurley will be retiring, and Captain Jason Harvey will be taking over a Chief. As we prepare for the handover, let’s take a quick look at the work our CPD has done since last year at this time.

Over the last year in person-on-person crimes, rates have gone up in some very concerning areas. Rape, assault, and intimidation are all at higher levels. Sex offences in the City have remained steady with a total of 34 reported each year. There were lower numbers of child/family offenses and kidnappings.

In crimes that involved the loss or damage of property, the only significant increases were found in theft from vehicles, bike theft, and shoplifting. Crimes listed as robberies, burglaries, arson, or stolen vehicles have remained nearly the same. There has been a drop in both fraud and vandalism.

For crimes which put the public at risk, the City saw an increase in disorderly conduct and warrant charges. The numbers of weapons charges, drug charges, liquor law infractions, DUIIs, littering charges, and animal ordinances remained about the same. There was a welcome dip in trespassing charges.

If you have a crime to report in the City of Corvallis such as theft, vandalism to a vehicle, vandalism to public or private property, or lost property, and do not have suspect information to include, you can once again file your report online rather than having to speak to an officer in person if you choose. You can file a report by following this link. For more information about this process, go here on the CPD website.

A new officer on our streets this year is Officer Nathan Diebel’s K-9 partner Nexus. They completed training in March. Nexus, a German Shepherd, was born in Denmark, is two-and-a-half-years old, and is beginning here as his first assignment as a police dog. As Nexus arrives, K-9 Officer Bolt has retired.

Scott Haberkorn, a CPD 911 operator and manager for 31 years, was awarded the Advancement of Public Safety Communications in Oregon (APCO) – National Emergency Number Association (NENA) Lifetime Achievement Award. Haberkorn has been instrumental in developing and modernizing the Corvallis 911 center.

As with most other places these days, the CPD is hiring. They are currently looking for people who are interested in becoming 911 Dispatchers and Supervisors, Records Specialists, Property Control Specialists, and Police Officers. If you’re interested in applying, go to the Corvallis Police website
