Benton County Sheriff Says There’s a Scam Targeting Families of Local Jail Inmates

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office, or BCSO, is warning the public about a recent scam targeting families of current adults in custody at their jail.

In recent days, the BCSO Jail has received multiple calls from concerned family members who were contacted by scammers demanding money for their loved one’s release. The scammers appear to be checking the online jail roster and then reaching out to relatives or friends of those listed.

The callers claim that the inmate can be released immediately with an ankle monitor — but only after a payment of $3,000 is made. These claims are false. The BCSO says the Benton County Jail does not authorize, coordinate, or accept payment over the phone or through third parties for the release of anyone in custody.

“We want to make it very clear — these calls are scams,” said Sheriff Van Arsdall. “Our staff will never contact a family member asking for money to release an AIC [inmate]. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and report it.”

BCSO is urging community members to verify any suspicious contact before providing personal information or sending money.

To protect yourself from scams, they offer this advice:

  • Do not send money or share financial information over the phone.
  • Verify any claims by contacting the Benton County Jail at 541-766-6866.
  • Report scam calls to BCSO at 541-766-6858.
