JEERS to us… The Advocate. Why this time, you may wonder… because of an awkward and potentially pornographic headline about the school district needing someone for the Budget Committee. We’ll try to do better in the future. [No, that does not mean we’re going for the fully pornographic headline! Get your mind out of the gutter]
SEMI-CHEERS for the unemployment rate. In Oregon it’s better… in Corvallis a tad bit worse since the holidays… but at least it’s no longer in double digits.
SOUR FACED BOOS AND HISSES for Power automotive dealers. They purchased the lot containing the old Sunny-Brook Dairy building – a landmark spot with fond memories for many Corvallisites. Except the folks at Power are pretty open about their plans to tear down the building. Why? So they can park more cars apparently. [In bike-and-history-friendly Corvallis, do we really need a place to park more cars? Jussaskin’]
WOO HOO for Moku Chocolate. Late last year we wrote about this fine local chocolatier, and we’re pleased to say owner Maureen Nikaido has brought home another win! This time from Good Food Awards for the best Dark Milk Chocolate. You’re doing the Mid-Valley proud, Maureen!
FURROWED BROWS over the news coming out about The Dollar Tree [and no, not about them raising their prices to $1.25 and not sufficiently noting it on their outside signage… get over it already, Toby]. Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined “The Tree” $32,000 for exposing employees to the potential for serious harm. [You know how many bags of crap they have to sell to make that kind of money!? Heck, they might have to empty a store or two for them bucks.] Anyhoo, the harm in questions was from the store in Wilsonville in the form of stuff falling, cramped aisles, people tripping, and not being able to access fire extinguishers or emergency exits. Seems the “potential harm” was a multiple-incident, didn’t-fix-it kind of situation, thus the fine.
HMMMM over the John Kitzhaber endorsement of Tobias Read for the next Governor of Oregon. We don’t know Read, will look at him closely as the May election comes along, but… does anyone really want that endorsement? Kitzhaber kinda left the office due to a bit of a scandal, if you remember. Although that was after he’d won a fourth term, so who are we to quibble.
CHEERS for extraditions. In this specific case, CHEERS that Washington state extradited Proud Boy member Tusitala “Tiny” Toese to Oregon to be tried for crimes committed during a Proud Boy rally in Portland. Toese had to face some Washington charges before Oregon got a swing at him. But now we get to watch as this leader of obnoxious men – this supporter of spraying bear mace at protesters – this far-right foofdangle of a man goes to trial for 11 different charges. [and yes, we made up the word foofdangle, we’re just that worked up]
And now this…
FUN TIMES with Trump back in the news. Seems Mr. Ex-President has filed a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations lawsuit [yeppers, that spells RICO… like what took down Al Capone] against… Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee… plus a slew of other people including ten “unknown entities.”
We could make up overly dramatic things to say about this, but Trump’s 108 page filing has beat us to it, reading in part: “The Defendants, blinded by political ambition, orchestrated a malicious conspiracy to disseminate patently false and injurious information about Donald J. Trump and his campaign, all in the hopes of destroying his life, his political career and rigging the 2016 Election in favor of Hillary Clinton.” And: “Indeed, their far-reaching conspiracy was designed to cripple Trump’s bid for the presidency by fabricating a scandal that would be used to trigger an unfounded federal investigation and ignite a media frenzy.” [We sincerely hope you read those quotes with the flair that we did.]
The filing goes on to say: “When their gambit failed, and Donald J. Trump was elected, the Defendants’ efforts continued unabated, merely shifting their focus to undermining his presidential administration.” [Wasn’t he the one who said something about his administration being the most successful in the history of, IDK, governmental administrations?]
Trump seeks a jury trial in Florida […where he has his home… where the Republicans roam…] and compensatory damages for the $24,000,000 he’s lost so far in business opportunities.
