CHEERS & JEERS: Not All Leaders Created Equal Really

WELCOME to our fair county’s new Chief Financial Officer Rick Crager. He’s worked with the State of Oregon for 32 years taking care of our schools’ finances, and will now be Benton County’s very own.

FAREWELL to OSU’s Shelby Walker as she leaves for a new leadership position at the National Science Foundation. Walker has done well leading the Oregon Sea Grant, and will be missed.

PLOT TWIST: If you’ve ever wondered why people are stealing catalytic converters, we have an answer! Because people are willing to steal anything they can sell to make money, and the converters are easy targets and worth a lot. [Palms are hitting foreheads all over the paper on this one] CHEERS for Oregon lawmakers who got it before Advocateers did, and passed Senate Bill 803 to make it harder to sell them. Pity we have to wait until next year for this one since Corvallisites are being robbed regularly. [*sigh*]

CHEERS for the Benton County Skateboarding Alliance! The BCSA has joined forces with the city to make a new addition to the Eric Scott McKinley Skate Park reality – along with a little over $100,000 in donations and grants. The newest addition will be the Corvallis Bowl, which is planned to sit beneath the overpass within the Hwy 34 right-of-way. According to Jackie Rochefort of the Parks Planning Department, “The BCSA has made this happen with their own hard work and volunteers.”

JEERS to Alsea School Superintendent Marc Thielman for attempting to misuse a government program meant to protect children in need as a means of allowing students to avoid COVID regulations. CHEERS that the Alsea schools pushed back their start date in order to keep things safe – especially as an Alsea school employee tested positive. How about we all work to keep kids safe from here on out, ‘k?

FURROWED BROWS for the people out there who are willing to use a drug meant for livestock to get over COVID. It is true that this medicine can be used on humans, but only if the human in question has one of two specific conditions caused by parasitic worms. Please remember, the COVID-19 virus is not a parasitic worm of any kind, and that taking Ivermectin [which, let’s repeat ourselves here, is meant for livestock – like we’re talking about horses and cows!] can cause you serious harm. The best medicine for COVID is not getting it in the first place. So, you know, go get vaccinated… and, here’s a list of Benton County vaccination information.

Loud, fierce, spike-heeled CHEERS for our very own Governor Kate Brown! News Weenie Tucker Carlson came aiming his guns at Brown’s sexual orientation [FYI she’s bi], saying “Why is this relevant?” and “How does having a groom at her wedding make Kate Brown an official member of the LGBTQ exclamation point community?” Brown’s response? “To every bisexual person out there struggling to explain to your friends and family who you are and who you love: you are not alone. Don’t let the bullies stop you from being true to yourself. You might even be a governor someday.” Need we say anymore?
