CHEERS & JEERS: ‘Tis the Season, Political Intentions Edition

CHEERS if you’re really into Board of Trustee meetings, because the board at Oregon State University will be getting together December 10! You can go to the meeting through links found in this webpage.

Alternatively, JEERS for more Board of Trustee meetings because who needs ‘em… you know, other than the Trustees. We can’t wait for December 11 to come along! Let’s just watch this video of cute animals.

CHEERS for Philomath’s edition of the Benton County Historical Society and their women inventors exhibit. [As a mostly female crew here, we support this idea with enthusiasm bordering on the manic] Did you know a woman invented the square bottomed bag? Another invented Scotchgard? And another, Hydyne rocket fuel? There are more of them – one and all amazing!

SAD SIGHS for Peter DeFazio deciding to retire. Granted he has done a whole heck of a lot for Oregon during his 36 years of service. He got called out by President Biden as “the guy to go to for infrastructure.” Also, he will be 75 years old at the end of next year, so we suppose it’s not a horribly terrible grumbly-bummer thing and guess that everyone should get to retire at some point. He will, however, be missed.

WE WAIT WITH BATED BREATH as rumors and maybes turn into announcements… who will be running to replace DeFazio. We know stuff, but it’s off record. [so JEERS for us even telling you we know stuff… but the suspense is SO DAMN DELICIOUS.]

CHEERS for Eugene. [yeah, yeah, we know, y’all hate Eugene, but…] The city is developing a “safe sleep” site called Eugene Village. The organizers hope to have 17 RVs and 13 Mini-shelters on location there. Their goal: to house 30 people before 2022 rolls around. And next year, they plan for another 60 to 100 more units.

SKEPTICAL EYEBROW LIFT for the Benton County Board of Commissioners and their “lifting the outdoor mask mandate.” Really? Did they really lift the outdoor mask mandate a full week after Gov. Brown lifted the outdoor mask mandate? Granted, they acknowledge that it “brings the County into alignment” with the state, but c’mon. Truly, we thought better of y’all than this.

FROWNY EMOJI for AG Ellen Rosenblum choosing to not run for governor. We like Rosenblum and think she’d be a strong candidate. She’s going to remain Attorney General, so we get to keep her around, working for the people, but gotta say we’re a little bummed on this one.

CHEERS for new parents and for the fact this is Breast Feeding Month. It’s a great way to protect your child and give them a solid start on life. And if you agree, then please consider giving to La Leche League – one of the remarkable charities we love as listed on our Give Local Guide.

CHEERS for Hanukkah. It might be a minor holiday to Jewish people, but we’re still lathering up the love for it, we’re lighting candles for it, we’re jumping up from our pews and running to the Ark and reading the Torah to show our support and love! [and, for the last time, Hanukkah is still not Jewish Christmas]

SNEAKY SNICKERS for the 50th Anniversary of the DB Cooper highjacking, which was “celebrated” Thursday, November 24. [aka the day before Thanksgiving, which fell on November 25 both this year and in 1971 – coincidence? We think not!] Cooper – if that was his name – went down in history for jumping from a plane over the Columbia River in the cold with a large amount of money that wasn’t technically his – some of said money was later found in the mud. Who he was we may never know, but he sure left a fun historical quandary for Oregonians.
