City Charter Debate: Two Long-Serving Councilors Disagree, Respectfully

This debate looks at Measure 2-159; it would amend the Corvallis City Charter; reducing the number of city councilors from nine to six and increasing their terms from two years to four. It would also limit councilors to three consecutive terms.

The debaters are two long-serving councilors on opposite sides of the issue. Ward 9 Councilor Tony Cadena supports the ballot measure; Ward 7 Councilor Paul Shaffer opposes it.

We go through the specific elements of the proposal with each, and we examine the criticisms leveled at the measure.

Notably, Shaffer and Cadena have both declined to seek reelection after multiple terms each, and watching the two debate is a pleasure as they both clearly respect one another. This debate runs about 43 minutes.
