In a wide-ranging debate running about an hour, Brennan Colberg and Greg Shiffer, candidates for Ward 6 on the Corvallis City Council, faced questions on everything from the City’s projected $8 million budget deficit and proposed civic campus to city management and any number of other issues.
They agreed on some things – but what quickly emerged is that Shiffer and Colberg are both well versed and fundamentally different candidates with vastly divergent views. This especially showed up in their answers on payroll and income taxes, and homelessness.
The Advocate’s Cityspeak Debate Series
Of nine council seats, five are contested, and over the course of this week we will conduct debates for each, with the currently posted Ward 6 debate being the first.. Two sitting councilors are running unopposed, and Ward 2 incumbent Briae Lewis will appear this evening opposite of challenger Tarsa Weikert. Councilors, at present, serve two-year terms.
Next week’s debates include the race for Corvallis Mayor, a ballot measure that would reduce the number of city councilors and expand their terms to four years, and a proposed tax levy supporting local schools. The Advocate will be posting the debates as they are completed.
