Democratic candidates vying to replace retiring Congressman Peter DeFazio are slated to debate Thursday night, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. – and if our discussions with them are an indicator, each of the seven are quite different from another.
The primary itself starts with ballots hitting mailboxes this week and concludes on May 17. Whichever of these seven wins the primary will face Republican Alek Skarlatos in November’s general election. Skarlatos runs unopposed for his party’s nomination.
Our congressional district has been presumptively Democratic for many years, having first elected outgoing Congressman DeFazio in 1986, and reelecting him every two years since. Now, with freshly redrawn lines, the percentage of Democrats in our district has climbed even higher, so whoever wins the Democratic primary would be seen by most experts as favored to win the general election come fall.
