Adair Village City Councilor John Wilson has announced that he is running for Benton County Commissioner Position 1 and has filed his paperwork for the May 19, 2026, Democratic Primary. His opponent will be incumbent Commissioner Pat Malone, who is seeking a third term.
“Benton County needs fresh leadership that listens to the voters and reflects back the expectations of the residents of Benton County,” Councilor Wilson said. “The voters deserve a change that better represents their priorities.”
Councilor Wilson said “I was very disappointed with the recent vote of the County Commission to expand the Coffin Butte Landfill. As a Benton County Planning Commissioner, I voted against Republic Services’ land use application and the Board of Commissioner’s reversal of the Planning Commission’s unanimous denial felt like a gut punch.”
Councilor Wilson says he will listen to the voices of rural communities and provide responsive leadership when approaching land use matters that may impact the health and safety of residents across Benton County.
Issues he’s talking about
Besides his opposition to the just approved landfill expansion, Wilson believes his background as a social worker positions him well to seek solutions to the affordability crisis in Benton County, and identify the needs of the unhoused. He says he will continue to support the work of the county’s Coordinated Homeless Response Office, or CHRO, in addressing what he views as an acute crisis.
The campaign also points out that Wilson, as an avid bicyclist, has always supported active transportation, such as multiuse paths and bikeways, and is ready to work to connect our communities across Benton County.
From his candidate’s filing
In his Candidate’s Filing Wilson outlines his work experience. Now retired, he had worked as a Children’s Services Family Case Manager; Disaster Case Management Supervisor; and as a Director of Disaster Preparedness and Response.
Wilson lists a BA in English from University of Mass Boston, and an MLA in Leadership & Ethics from Springhill College.
He lists his governmental experience: Ward 4 City Councilor Adair Village (2025-present); Benton County Planning Commissioner (2023 – Present); Battle ground IN City Council Person (2005-2007); Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commissioner (2005-2007); Battle Ground Water Conservancy District Director (2008).
