Corvallis Repertory Singers. First United Methodist Church, 1165 NW Monroe Avenue, Corvallis. 3 p.m. $20 – $25. This season’s opening concert, Pathways: Songs of Redemption, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 22, 3 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Corvallis, includes the “Sunrise Mass” by Ola Gjeilo, the Norwegian-born composer and pianist who now lives in California. Music by Gjeilo has racked up more than 230 million streams on various online platforms. Dr. Steven Zielke, the artistic director for the Repertory Singers and the Patricia Valian Reser professor of music at OSU, said Gjeilo’s music reminds some listeners of film scores and noted that the Mass is “very atmospheric” music. The Repertory Singers performed a Gjeilo work, “Serenity (O Magnum Mysterium)” at a recent concert. This concert also features two early-music works; Bach’s “Cantata BWV 47” and Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Motet: Laudate Pueri, H. 149.” Featured soloists for these compositions are OSU music graduates soprano, Elise Gidley Groves, and bass, Daniel Fridley. Zielke is thrilled to have both young professionals back in Corvallis to perform in this season’s opening concert. Mackessy is Professor of Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado. His research broadly encompasses the biology of venomous snakes and the biochemistry of snake venoms, and he has published over 200 scientific papers, book chapters and natural history notes, and several books (Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles, 1st & 2nd eds. – CRC Press; The Biology of Rattlesnakes II – ECO Herpetological Publishing). His research has included many post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as colleagues from Singapore, Spain, México, Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, France, India, University of Texas and various US universities. Several ongoing projects focus on understanding the evolution of venom systems in snakes and the biological significance of venom compositional variation, as well as investigating potential therapeutic applications of toxins..
