The Tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra. Majestic Theatre, 115 SW 2nd St, Corvallis. 7:30 p.m. $14 – $16. A story of doomed love between two extraordinarily selfish and powerful people, set against a sweeping background of the geopolitical conflicts of antiquity. Antony, Roman general and politician, and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, can’t settle on one choice: should they put their desire for one another above their responsibilities? Or prioritize their politics over their passions? In striving for both, they achieve nothing but miscommunication, isolation, and ultimately, utter tragedy. In this radical, stripped-down adaptation, three actors transform themselves into every role. Created as a socially distanced theatre project at the height of the pandemic, the staging highlights the social isolation that yet lingers in our lives—each actor confined to their own small playing space, unable to reach out and touch one another, speaking at and around each other, striving for connection—an echo of the loneliness found in the hearts of every character in this play. Rated: PG-13 CONTENT WARNINGS: This play contains discussions and descriptions of intimacy, violence, and war, as well as several onstage suicides.
