I Lived to Tell the World – Multimedia Exhibition. PRAx, Toomey Lobby, 470 SW 15th Street, Corvallis. 6 am – 6 pm Monday – Friday. 12 – 4 pm on Saturday. The exhibit runs through March 1, 2025. The exhibit, inspired by journalist Elizabeth Mehren’s book of the same name, celebrates the stories of people who have survived perilous journeys and unthinkable cruelty in their home countries only to build productive new lives in Oregon. These survivors are united by a troubling truth: human despotism, barbarism, and cruelty sometimes know no bounds. And yet, as this exhibition aims to make clear, humanity is also made up of the courageous and the resilient. Jackson Meadow Restoration Volunteer Opportunity. Jackson Meadow in the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest (coordinates provided upon RSVP). 9 am. Join IAE and OSU for volunteer opportunities at Jackson Meadow in the McDonald-Dunn Research Forest. During these events, volunteers will help dig and pull Italian arum, spurge laurel, and Scotch broom using shovels, soil knives, and weed wrenches. Volunteer efforts will help prepare the site for native seeding and planting, directly contributing to the success of this restoration project. Abstract Illusionism: Rip Cronk & George D. Green. Philomath Museum. 1101 Main Street, Philomath. 10 am – 4:30 pm. Exhibit runs until March 9, 2025. While they work in different styles, both Rip Cronk and George D. Green use techniques of illusion in their artwork to force viewers to consider the world a little differently. George Green was a fifth-generation Oregonian and a founding member of the Abstract Illusionists. His work has been shown in the U.S. and Europe and is represented in 60 museums. After a 30-year tenure in NYC, George returned to Oregon where he passed away in 2020. Rip Cronk, known as the muralist of Venice Beach, has been in Benton County for over ten years and is a very active member of the arts community here. Clink! A Taste of Oregon Wine. Philomath Museum. 1101 Main Street, Philomath. 10 am – 4:30 pm. Exhibit runs until May 4. This exhibit, on loan from the Oregon Historical Society, explores the story of Oregon wine and some of the moments that make up its history. The narrative spans over 150 years, from the pioneers who brought grapevines on the Oregon Trail to the winegrowers who blazed a new trail in the 1960s to the innovations continuing to take place across the state. Learn about the seasonal workers who support an entire industry and the dedication of people who have grown, made, and embraced Oregon wine. Visit Clink! Memory Quilts Exhibit. Corvallis Museum, 411 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis. 10 am – 4:30 pm until March 16, 2025. Stitched in Memory… Often called friendship quilts, signature quilts, or memory quilts, in the United States the tradition of quilts to memorialize friends, relatives, and communities began in the 1840s. Early examples featured individual blocks contributed by those within a social network, with signatures in indelible ink. As trends and methods changed blocks started to feature embroidery, applique, and fabric paint, and the quilts often included references to activities, hobbies, and personalities as well as names. Put a Bird on It! Finley, Feathers, & Fashion. Utilizing many of the taxidermy birds from the Horner Collection, this exhibit will look at the connections between fashion, feathers, and the conservation work of William L. Finley. Storytime is offered year-round as a drop-in program: first come, first served. Space is limited due to the room capacity and to provide a positive, safe environment for all. Anthropology Lecture Series Winter 2025. Learning Innovation Center, 165 SW Sackett Place, Corvallis. 12 pm. The OSU Anthropology Lecture Series features guest speakers from the OSU community, as well as visitors from academic institutions, government agencies, non-government organizations and businesses in Oregon and beyond. Each quarter, a new roster of speakers are invited to give 30–45-minute presentations on cutting-edge research, current events and other projects that resonate with the OSU Anthropology community. Emilee Cha’s exhibit Threads, explores traditional Hmong textile art called “Paj Ntaub” and its symbolic language through present day exploratory methods. Whenever they bring comedians to town they always ask them “Who are the best new stand-ups we need to know about?” And for the past couple years they’ve all said the same thing, “Maddie Wiener. Maddie Wiener. Maddie Wiener.” Still in her mid-twenties, she’s already opened for everyone from Dave Attell to Nikki Glaser, done a set for Comedy Central, and been named to Just For Laughs’ prestigious New Faces lineup. While they work in different styles, both Rip Cronk and George D. Green use techniques of illusion in their artwork to force viewers to consider the world a little differently. George Green was a fifth-generation Oregonian and a founding member of the Abstract Illusionists. His work has been shown in the U.S. and Europe and is represented in 60 museums. After a 30-year tenure in NYC, George returned to Oregon where he passed away in 2020. Rip Cronk, known as the muralist of Venice Beach, has been in Benton County for over ten years and is a very active member of the arts community here. I Lived to Tell the World – Multimedia Exhibition. PRAx, Toomey Lobby, 470 SW 15th Street, Corvallis. 6 am – 6 pm Monday – Friday. 12 – 4 pm on Saturday. Exhibit runs through March 1, 2025. The exhibit, inspired by journalist Elizabeth Mehren’s book of the same name, celebrates the stories of people who have survived perilous journeys and unthinkable cruelty in their home countries only to build productive new lives in Oregon. These survivors are united by a troubling truth: human despotism, barbarism, and cruelty sometimes know no bounds. And yet, as this exhibition aims to make clear, humanity is also made up of the courageous and the resilient. Abstract Illusionism: Rip Cronk & George D. Green. Philomath Museum. 1101 Main Street, Philomath. 10 am – 4:30 pm. Exhibit runs until March 9, 2025. While they work in different styles, both Rip Cronk and George D. Green use techniques of illusion in their artwork to force viewers to consider the world a little differently. George Green was a fifth-generation Oregonian and a founding member of the Abstract Illusionists. His work has been shown in the U.S. and Europe and is represented in 60 museums. After a 30-year tenure in NYC, George returned to Oregon where he passed away in 2020. Rip Cronk, known as the muralist of Venice Beach, has been in Benton County for over ten years and is a very active member of the arts community here. Clink! A Taste of Oregon Wine. Philomath Museum. 1101 Main Street, Philomath. 10 am – 4:30 pm. Exhibit runs until May 4. This exhibit, on loan from the Oregon Historical Society, explores the story of Oregon wine and some of the moments that make up its history. The narrative spans over 150 years, from the pioneers who brought grapevines on the Oregon Trail to the winegrowers who blazed a new trail in the 1960s to the innovations continuing to take place across the state. Memory Quilts Exhibit. Corvallis Museum, 411 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis. 10 am – 4:30 pm until March 16, 2025. Stitched in Memory… Often called friendship quilts, signature quilts, or memory quilts, in the United States the tradition of quilts to memorialize friends, relatives, and communities began in the 1840s. Early examples featured individual blocks contributed by those within a social network, with signatures in indelible ink. As trends and methods changed blocks started to feature embroidery, applique, and fabric paint, and the quilts often included references to activities, hobbies, and personalities as well as names. From Thorns to Blossoms: A Japanese-American Family in Peace and War. Corvallis Museum, 411 SW Second Street, Corvallis. 10:30 am. Free for members; $5 non-members. Registration required. Speaker: Mitzi Loftus. Mitsuko “Mitzi” Asai was not yet ten years old in the spring of 1942 when President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 sent 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry—about two-thirds of them US citizens—from their homes on the West Coast to inland prison camps. Mitzi and most of her family, who operated a fruit orchard in Hood River, Oregon, were incarcerated in California and Wyoming for most of World War II.  Her talk about her family’s experience will illuminate the personal side of a dark chapter in US history. It’s the remarkable story of a transformation from thorns into blossoms, pain into healing. This lecture will include American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. In this seminar, Daniel Chapman will discuss his recent research findings on how public health and environmental agencies communicate wildfire smoke risks to communities in the Pacific Northwest, including insights on the timing and effectiveness of smoke warnings. He will present evidence showing that current institutional communications often lack proactive messaging and numeric risk information, while offering recommendations for improving public health messaging about smoke hazards, including the need for earlier warnings and more emphasis on specific protective actions people can take.
