Undermining the Field: A Counter-history of Technical Communication and Risk. Memorial Union Building (MU), 213, Pan-Afrikan Sankofa Room, 2501 SW Jefferson Way, Corvallis. 4:30 p.m. Free. A work-in-progress talk by Dr. Ehren Pflugfelder, OSU School of Writing, Literature, and Film. Technical communication has been framed as the practice of determining how discourse could best represent scientific (and industrial) knowledge in order to be useful to humanity. But technical communication has a different side—a close alignment with extractive industry and an ignorance of its role in the unequal distribution of risk. This presentation re-writes the history of the technical communication field by “undermining” it—by looking at key moments of its relationship with extractive industries and risk. Examining instances such as the emergence of writing in Sumer, Agricola’s De re Metallica, the first technical writing textbook—developed by mining engineers, and modern-day research on risk communication, this project calls technical communication to examine and account for the greater harms in which it has been complicit.
