String and Shadow Puppet Theater. Avery Park, Townsend Shelter, 1200 SW Avery Park Dr., Corvallis. 6 p.m. String and Shadow is a troupe of multi-disciplinary performance artists based in Olympia, Washington. They create giant puppet shows set to live, original music. As storytellers, String and Shadow create heartfelt performances for people of all ages. String and Shadow’s 2023 show is called “Ship of Fools: A Giant Puppet Odyssey.” In it, three mimes set sail from the Port of Styx across the mythical boundary waters connecting the world of the living to the underworld. Aboard a mysteriously sentient ship, they encounter a world of beautiful and strange creatures: hermit crabs carrying houses on their backs, a ghostly humpback whale, and much more. Under layers of colorful fabric and dancing cardboard, Ship of Fools deals with themes of loss and acceptance, depicting a wondrous unknown and speaking to the power of friendship and love. Zimfest is three days of Zimbabwean-inspired fun for all ages: dynamic concerts, hands-on workshops, an African marketplace and more. The Zimbabwean Music Festival is an annual celebration of Zimbabwean music and culture. A fun-filled four-day weekend of concerts, workshops, community conversations, a marketplace and more, Zimfest is the largest annual gathering in North America of students, teachers, performers, and fans of Zimbabwean music. Wonderful Wavelengths and Fascinating Frequencies– for teens and tweens. Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe Ave, Corvallis. 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. & 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Tweens in grades 4-6 and teens in grades 6-12 are invited to join visiting Fulbright Scholar Dr. Derek Fish for a highly entertaining journey into Wonderful Wavelengths and Fascinating Frequencies which give us all the colors and sounds we sometimes take for granted. Dr. Fish will be joined by local artists and educators Andrea Heidinger, Keith Moses, Shawn Rowe and others as they show and discuss how they bridge the gap between art and science.
