City Council Executive Session. 4 p.m. Downtown Fire Station: Council Chambers, 400 NW Harrison Blvd., Corvallis. The Council will meet in Executive Session under ORS 192.660(2)(h) (status of pending litigation or litigation likely to be filed). The City Council meets in executive session to discuss sensitive matters or receive information. These executive sessions usually deal with real property transactions, litigation, or labor negotiations; other allowed subjects would include employment of a public officer, dismissal or disciplining of a public officer, preliminary negotiations involving matters of trade, employment performance of the chief executive officer, or negotiations regarding public investments. Although the public may not attend executive sessions, representatives of the news media may attend and, while information obtained during the session may not be printed, it may be used as background. Decisions are not made during executive sessions; a consensus may be reached, but all decisions resulting from information obtained in executive session are made during a public meeting. Know Your City: Effective Participation in the City Budget Process. 6:30 p.m. The League of Women Voters of Corvallis is offering two hybrid educational Know Your City programs for 2024. The first on January 30 will cover the City of Corvallis budget process and the second on February 6 is on multi-modal transportation. Both programs will be held at 6:30 PM in the Corvallis Benton County Public Library Meeting Room, 645 NW Monroe Ave., Corvallis and via ZOOM. These popular programs, launched six years ago, are designed to inform the public on various aspects of our city government. Finding Your Voice: Effective Participation in the City Budget Process on Tuesday, January 30 will cover the nuts and bolts of the City budget process and how to effectively give input. Join City Manager Mark Shepard, City Councilor Tony Cadena and former Budget Commission Chair Curtis Wright to get your questions answered. Getting Around in Corvallis: Improvements to the City’s Multi-modal Transportation, will take place on Tuesday, February 6. The future is looking bright for the Corvallis multi-modal transportation system with new pedestrian and bicycle features, new multi-purpose paths and neighborhood bikeways, improved mass transit services, a new future parking system for downtown and new Federal ADA requirements. The Neuroscience of Narrative. The Art Center Main Gallery, 700 SW Madison Ave., Corvallis. 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. $10. Exhibiting artist, Jeff Leake & company share the neuroscience behind how the human brain creates meaning from narrative at this interactive lecture. At this event, The Neuroscience of Narrative, artist Jeff Leake joins Dr. Bill Griesar (PSU, OHSU, NWNoggin) to present the biology that underlies how humans create meaning through narrative. Storytelling in combination with sensory and past experience profoundly shapes human’s understanding of the world. This suggests that our brain constantly makes predictions about the world. In Leake’s work, he explores the interplay between cultural narratives and human relationships to encourage a nuanced understanding of human interaction and storytelling.
