The Frolic Home Run Derby. 502 S 13th Street, Philomath. 6 p.m. $10. There are three brackets, men’s, women’s, and teens, for the home run competition. There is also a youth farthest hit competition for children 12 and under. $10 registration fee per batter. Winners get a $25 gift certificate to the Frolic souvenir hut and one (1) year of bragging rights. Home Run Derby Rules: Each batter will have 10 swings. Batters do not have to swing at every pitch. A missed swing, foul ball, or tip is counted as a swing. A home run has to go over the fence. The top 50% of players in each bracket will advance to the following rounds. Ties will lead to a sudden death round. Each batter will receive 4 swings. Bats and balls will be provided. Players may use their own bats at the approval of the judges. Batters may select their own pitchers; however, once a pitcher is selected, you may not switch pitchers. Awards will be given to the first place finishers of the men’s, women’s, young men’s and young women’s brackets. Youth Farthest Hit Rules: Each batter will have 10 pitches. Batters should try to swing at every pitch. The farthest ball hit by the player will be marked and recorded. Once every player has hit, the player with the farthest recorded hit will be the winner. The inaugural exhibition in PRAx connects our gallery programming to the musical side of our mission. “Sonic Booms: How the Sound and Science of Technology Created Pop Music” unveils how advancements in science and technology drove the development of pop forms over the past 150 years of music-making. In addition to historical objects – including the original mini-Moog synthesizer and a 19th century wax cylinder player invented by Thomas Edison – interactive displays anchor the exhibition, inviting the visitor to participate in the history they are encountering. Come make your own hip-hop beats, mix a record and listen to the ways in which recording fidelity has evolved over the decades. LaDuke’s current exhibitions focus on social justice from multiple perspectives, with colorful, elaborate totems and turtles carrying messages of resilience. This retrospective art exhibition includes paintings, prints and panels created between 1972 and 2023. Other recent exhibits by Betty LaDuke include Fire, Fury, and Resilience: Totem Witnesses and Totem Wisdom, and Turtle Wisdom: Personal, Political, and Playful. In 1993, La Duke received the Oregon Governor’s Award in the Arts. In 1996, she received the National Art Education Association’s Ziegfeld Award for Distinguished International Leadership and the Oregon Medallion Award 2019. Philomath Frolic and Rodeo – Chalk Roundup. Philomath Library Sidewalk, Philomath Community Library, 1050 Applegate St, Philomath. 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Free. Each year the Library hosts the Frolic Chalk Round-up in front of the Philomath Community Library building. Upon arriving, artists of all ages, abilities, and imaginations register and are given a 5 ft. x 5 ft. section of sidewalk to color. All chalk is provided, but participants may use their own as well. This is not so much a competition as it is an opportunity to have some fun, be creative, and show off your artwork to the community during the rest of Frolic weekend. This year’s event is Friday, July 12, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. No pre-registration is required. No fee for participation.
