Corvallis Culture: Sindya Bhanoo Reading, Really Really Free Filmfest, Science Pub, Geography Symposium, Campbell Lecture Series

The Oregon State University Music a la Carte series is back! Beginning today, each Friday from 12:00-12:45 p.m., music will be made in the main lounge of the Memorial Union Building, located at 2501 SW Jefferson Way. The series begins with a trio of bassoons from the Oregon Symphony, and next week will see Mike Gamble with jazz guitar.

Tonight’s the Night: Tonight, Friday, September 30, is the night to leave summer behind and embrace the autumn coming with a reading from a remarkable short story writer. Sindya Bhanoo, author of Seeking Fortune Elsewhere, will be reading at the Oregon State University Valley Library Rotunda, located at 201 SW Waldo Place, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The short stories in this book are about immigrant families as they experience dislocation and dissonance in their travels from home to some place they hope will become home. A widow sees her future as she waits for a daughter to visit from America; a professor is accused of exploiting graduate students; an opportunity arises for a woman long beaten down by her husband. Bhanoo’s stories are a haunting landscape of humanity.

This is a don’t miss reading to feed your soul.

Interzone Teams Up with RRFM: We spoke to Benicio at Interzone, and things are getting creative over on Monroe.

On Saturday, October 1, the Really Really Free Market will be holding a film festival at Interzone. This is all about small filmmakers in the Mid-Willamette Valley. So, what five-to-eight-minute gems has RRFM found? You’ll have to come to Interzone by 6:00 p.m. to find out.

And, for the writers among us, Interzone is holding poetry open mic night on every first Friday of the month. That gives you exactly one week, until October 7, to figure out what you want to read.

Interzone is located at 1563 NW Monroe Ave.

OSU Pub Talks Take on Ukrainian War: The next OSU Pub Talk is happening October 4. This free event begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Old World Deli with registration required, although you can attend virtually if you prefer. The subject of the talk is the war in Ukraine, and the featured speaker is Sarah Henderson – an associate professor of political science.

Seven months after they were invaded by Russia, Ukraine has not only managed to stay free, but they have had recent victories that are significant. Meanwhile, the western world thought that sanctions against Russia would be enough to cripple the eastern European country and end the war in short order, and that prediction didn’t come true. So what can we expect as this war continues?

Lecture on Land & Agricultural Landscapes: On Wednesday, October 5, 3:00-4:00 p.m., take the time to listen to Wiley Thompson and Hannah Gosnell in their Geography Symposium.

Thompson will speak on the topic of “Your Land Grant Home and Your Extension Neighbors” and Gosnell will present “An integral approach to understanding transformation on agricultural landscapes.” This lecture event is being organized by the OSU College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, and it will be held in Burt Hall, located at 2651 SW Orchard Ave.

Campbell Lecture Series: If your lecture interests go less geographical and more psychological, then next Friday afternoon may be up your alley. The Campbell Lecture Series on Childhood Relationships, Risk and Resilience is welcoming Shannon Beth Wanless, PhD. to speak about “Developing Communities of Practice in Early Childhood to Promote Justice & Equity.”

Wanless, who earned her doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University, will be speaking on Friday, October 1 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Bray Conference Room in the Hallie Ford Center, located at 2631 SW Campus Way. You can also watch this presentation virtually over Zoom.
