Corvallis Year of the Snake Celebration, Sunday

The Lunar New Year, known as “Spring Festival” in Chinese culture, is celebrated by millions across many countries and cultures worldwide, and our fair little burgh has been extended a solid invite to participate in the festivities.

Slated for 3:30 to 6 pm, this Sunday, February 9, at the Corvallis Community Center, this event is an opportunity to ring in the Lunar New Year of the Snake with a vibrant Spring Festival Gala. Held in the lead-up to the Chinese Lantern Festival, it promises to showcase the cultural richness surrounding the annual chiming in of the New Year.

The organizers say the event will offer immersive cultural experiences, including Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting, traditional dances, musical performances, Chinese food, and a festive costume parade. Attendees of all ages are welcome.

About the tradition

The Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is indeed celebrated across the globe, but wherever it is marked it always symbolizes family reunions, hope, and the arrival of spring.

The Chinese Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, traditionally features cultural celebrations and interactive puzzle games through lantern displays. It marks the conclusion of the celebrations and welcomes a fresh, prosperous start to the year.

This year, Lunar New Year fell on January 29, 2025, and the Chinese Lantern Festival falls on February 12, 2025.
