COVID Spikes in Kids

The demographics of confirmed COVID-19 cases have changed in Oregon. While adults still account for most cases, the numbers of new cases reported since January show 50% increase in those aged 10 to 19, and decrease in those 20-50.

This trend is also seen nationwide. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, hospital admissions due to COVID doubled in the population under 20 since January. It is not fully understood why the coronavirus has become more prevalent among youths and several theories were put forth, including isolation practiced among elderly, and more adults working from home.

In their data analysis of cases, the AAP has shown spikes in COVID cases among 18-19 year olds in last September and a dip among 0-17 year olds in February.

Reported cases in college students are clearly contributing to the increase of the cases among younger people. Oregon State University has observed an increase in presumptive and confirmed cases, spiking in mid-February. Weekly testing of students living in dormitories shows more asymptomatic, mild cases overall.

Tracking severe cases in Oregon and in Washington proved to be difficult due to errors in record keeping and incomplete data collected. This has been the case nationwide as well.
