Fourth Booster Details
Up until recently, only those who are immunocompromised were eligible for a fourth Covid shot. Now, two new sets of people are also eligible.
Anyone over the age of 50 who has received three doses of an mRNA vaccine – meaning either Pfizer of Moderna – and are at least four months past their latest vaccine dose, may receive another mRNA vaccine. Additionally, any adult who has received one Johnson & Johnson vaccine and a booster, and are at least four months past their second shot, are eligible to receive an mRNA vaccine.
A new study coming out of Israel has determined that a fourth shot does not boost protection against becoming sick, but does increase antibodies and leads to milder symptoms.
To date, about half of those eligible for a booster in the U.S. have not gotten one. As we face the BA.2 subvariant which is extremely contagious, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly encourage people to get the added protection.

Countrywide, between 51% and 59% of all new cases have been caused by the Omicron BA.2 subvariant. The previous week, only 39% were BA.2. Hardest hit to date have been the states in the Northeastern region.

Fourth Shot on the Way
The Biden Administration is expected to approve a second booster shot of either Moderna or Pfizer for anyone over the age of 50. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are then expected to apply a “permissive recommendation” for the fourth shot – meaning they allow it but do not officially recommend it. The distinction of these recommendations allow the shot to be made available but bypass independent scientific advisory for both the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC.
