Measuring Garbage: Consider a pound of hamburger. It’s not even enough to feed a family of four unless you add a little something to it – General Mills’ Hamburger Helper showed us that in the 70’s. Now, multiply that one pound by 2,000 and you have a ton of hamburger, which would make a lot of Hamburger Helper. Then, multiply that 2,000 pounds of red, raw ground beef by 500,000 and you have the amount of garbage layered across the Coffin Butte Landfill each year. That’s one billion pounds of garbage. Now you can see why the people living near the landfill are worried about the idea of it being expanded.
Last weekend there was a tour of the landfill led by Coffin Butte representatives to aid the Benton County TrashTalks advisory group – although it was also open to residents who were able to register in time. During that tour, it was noted that “half a million tons” of garbage are deposited into the landfill each year. This coming weekend, there will be another tour, this one by request of Joel Geier – a Coffin Butte neighbor.
If you’d like to be part of the second tour, RSVP by email to pioinfo@co.benton.or.us by Thursday, September 29, at 5:00 p.m. This second tour will be held on Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 a.m., meeting in Adair Village along Arnold Rd.
TrashTalks Vacancy: In the meeting this morning, they will be discussing the fact that Brandon Bates has chosen to resign from the Benton County committee that will advise the County on Coffin Butte. A new member will therefore be assigned.
HOPE Board Meeting: The HOPE Advisory Board will be having a public meeting Wednesday, September 28 at 4:00 p.m. During the meeting, there will be a discussion titled “How do CHCs serve our community and how do they intersect with homelessness?” Guest Speakers on this topic will include Carla Jones, Health Center Director; Christine Mosbaugh, Population Health and Engagement Manager; and Dr. Jennifer Micek, DO Physician, Assistant Medical Director.
This is a virtual meeting. Details on how to join can be found on the Benton County website.
