Laura King & the Supremes: Laura King is a member of the board of directors for the Corvallis Boys & Girls Club and the Oregon Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. After certain decisions came down from the Supreme Court in June of this politically-divisive year, King decided to learn as much as she could about the Court. The big questions of the moment were how this came to pass, and is the Court more politically driven than in other times in our history.
King and her mother took that information and co-wrote a presentation which reviews the history of the Supreme Court and an examination of the current justices who sit there. The talk will include current decisions being heard by the Court over the next few years, how the Court may be structured in the years to come, and whether the Court should be restructured.
The first presentation will be given virtually on Monday, November 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Register in advance here. The follow up, in-person event is on Thursday, November 17, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, located at 645 NW Monroe Ave.
Note: The dates for this event have been changed to due to the presenters not wishing to be seen as trying in influence votes. The dates above are correct.
Corvallis Shelter Project: With $1 million available from the Oregon Legislature, the City of Corvallis is looking for great ideas to support the Houseless. The goal is to fund shelters as well as transitional and permanent housing and accompanying services. If you have a proposal, get it into the hands of the Housing Committee before 5:00 p.m. on October 19 by clicking this link. For more information, contact Housing and Neighborhood Services Manager Brigetta Olson at brigetta.olson@corvallisoregon.gov or 541-766-6555.
CVHS Drug Theft: Now former Crescent Valley High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director, Darren Bland, was arrested on suspicion of stealing two bottles of generic Adderall – a stimulant medication used to treat ADHD – from a student as well as for “other crimes.” CVHS Principal Aaron McKee reported the crime. The arrest happened on September 19, but only recently came to public knowledge. Bland, who is out on conditional release, will be in court again Thursday, October 27.
Commissioners Reject Construction Protest: In late September, the Benton County Board of Commissioners and the Public Works Department chose to close competitive bidding for the construction of the new courthouse and District Attorney’s offices. Local company Foundation Engineering filed a protest claiming that they would be a better option as a more local company with a great deal of experience. The Commissioners disagreed and voted unanimously to reject the protest.

Corrections: In our original article, we said that the money for the Corvallis Shelter Project has to be spent by June of next year. Brigetta Olson contacted us to say that due to the housing shortage, they do not have to spend the money as soon as possible.
