Corvallis based forest wildlife ecologist Katie Moriarty, PhD, will review Crossings: How Road Ecology Is Shaping the Future of Our Planet, by Ben Goldfarb, as part of the library’s Random Review series this month.
Set for 12 noon, Wednesday, May 13, folks can join in person at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s main meeting room, or online at cbcpl.net/RR2526.
Human built roads are littered with the bodies of animals (a million killed in the U.S. every day), and vehicle-wildlife collisions cause untold damage to vehicles and driver injuries and death. Roads also disrupt migration patterns, drown out the calls of songbirds, contaminate waterways and provide pathways to invasive plants.
Environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb’s Crossings reveals how the new field of road ecology is seeking solutions, from bridges and tunnels for mammals and amphibians to rehabilitation of logging roads to animal rehab centers for injured critters.
About the book
Crossings was the 2024 winner of the Rachel Carson Award for Excellence in Environmental Journalism, and was named a best book of the year by the New York Times, The New Yorker, Smithsonian Magazine, and others. Goldfarb’s previous book, Eager, on the natural history of the beaver, was a popular Random Review selection in October 2021.
