What do the hurricanes in the Southeast have to do with blood donation here. Firstly, supplies became critically low over the summer, and they haven’t fully rebounded yet.
Also, according to Isabel Anderson of the American Red Cross. “Since making landfall, the storm and its aftermath have led to the cancellation of more than 100 blood drives, causing thousands of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. For so many people living with urgent medical care needs, blood transfusions are essential, and donations in the Southeast are key to keeping our nationwide network stocked. The Red Cross operates through a national inventory with the ability to move blood wherever and whenever it is needed most.”
The hurricanes have been a double-blow for blood supplies – the storm creates more injuries that result in a need for blood, but less blood can be collected in the impacted area. The impacts affects blood supplies nationwide.
This is why donors outside of affected areas, which means we Corvallisites, are encouraged to make an appointment to give now and help keep the blood supply stable in the weeks to come.
To encourage blood donations, the Red Cross is offering gift cards. All who come to give blood, platelets or plasma over October are receiving a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, plus they’re being automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards.
