Some call it the writing world’s version of a marathon – 30 days, 50,000 words and one original novel. You can join in on the fun with hundreds of thousands of people around the world during the month of November for the transformative, fun-filled challenge known as NaNoWriMo. When the event started years ago, it was called National Novel Writing Month.
Benton County will be celebrating with local events, including a Novel Planning Party and Write Ins, where you will find month-long support and encouragement.
The Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, Corvallis Community Center, and Monroe Community Library will host the Write-ins, which are weekly writing sessions to celebrate NaNoWriMo. Writers ages 13 years and older of all skill levels are welcome at these events.
Novel Planning Party
Monday, October 30th, 5:30-7pm in the C3 Oak Room
Get ready to write your novel and meet fellow Wrimos! Learn what NaNoWriMo is (and how to say it), create an outline or storyboard for your novel, name your characters, build your world, and bounce ideas off of other local writers. Still not sure if you want to participate in NaNoWriMo? This is your chance to learn more and join a supportive community of writers!
Write Ins
Tuesdays, 5:30-7pm in the C3 Oak Room
Wednesdays, 3-6pm at the Monroe Community Library
Saturdays (except 11/11), 2-5pm in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s 2nd Floor Board Room
At Write Ins, writers may drop in anytime to write. Bring your preferred writing tools, whether it is a pen and paper or a laptop, and work on your novel surrounded by other local writers. At many of the Write Ins there will be drinks, snacks, and even prizes.
These events are co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
What is NaNoWriMo?
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing.
On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 p.m. on November 30.
Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. To learn more about NaNoWriMo please visit www.nanowrimo.org.
Please contact the library at 541-766-6793 for more information about these events. If any member of the public has a disability and needs accommodations to attend this event, please call 541-766-6928, allowing 48 hours’ notice for this service.
Also, let us digress into editorializing for just a moment: Some Advocateers think NaNoWriMo is the greatest thing since coffee and spell-check, others find it a dubious celebration, claiming it celebrates churn over quality. We won’t be attempting to settle this debate.
However, we can all agree… never-ever-ever tell your editor you’re late with your assignment because of your November novel writing adventure. Interns have tried this excuse, and it never ends well.
And, now back to covering next week’s highlights…
