Senate Bill 870 would ensure Oregon’s seven electoral college votes go to the winner of the popular vote in presidential elections.
Introduced by forty lawmakers last week, there is some bipartisan support for the bill, and it is notable that the lower house had passed similar legislation four times in the past.
If passed, Oregon would join eleven other states in a compact. The compact goes into effect if enough states sign on to bound the majority of electoral college votes, 270 out of 538. Currently, the states signed on bring the total to 171.
