Oregon Vets: Bridge Grants Still Available

Oregon veterans seeking financial assistance in a gap between educational programs are encouraged to apply for the Veteran Educational Bridge Grant, as the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs is still accepting applications.

This program, implemented in 2019, exists with the purpose of assisting Oregon veterans with their educational goals by providing financial assistance during a gap when required courses or training aren’t available in order to allow them to remain in school or an apprenticeship program until they complete it

Eligible student veterans can receive grants for as much as $5,000.

To qualify, a recipient must be eligible for GI Bill® benefits, be an Oregon resident, and enrolled in an academic or training program both based in the state and approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The average award for a recipient has been $4,382, received in an average of five days after application submission.

ODVA has awarded more than $200,000 to over 40 veterans in programs such as traditional degrees, professional certificates, and apprenticeships.

“ODVA is grateful for the opportunity to help so many worthy veterans complete their education or vocational training, which we know can have a lasting, meaningful impact on the quality of life they are able to lead for themselves and their families,” said ODVA Director Kelly Fitzpatrick in a statement.. “Particularly in the midst of the unprecedented circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the barriers many student veterans face in achieving their educational goals, and our team stands ready to help in any way we can.”

Under certain circumstances, veterans may be eligible for retroactive funding as well.
