OSU Professors to Present on Childhood Resilience

On April 11, Oregon State University professors Shannon Lipscomb and Barbara Brody will present on the topic of resilience in children and their communities. Their Science Pub presentation is titled, “On the Road to Recovery: Promoting Resilience with Children and Early Educators.”

Brody and Lipscomb define resilience as positive adaptation in the face of adversity or trauma. They note that many early educators do not receive the necessary support to develop their own resilience.

Professor Brody is an associate professor of practice with OSU Extension in Malheur County and oversees a diverse group of Extension programs. Professor Lipscomb is an Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at OSU-Cascades; her research identifies specific social supports that help children cope with adversity and trauma. Her research suggests that many of these protective supports implicate the resilience of adults – ergo, providing support for these adults empowers the children in their care.

Through OSU’s Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families, Brody and Lipscomb have collaborated on a pilot project to facilitate connections between campus and community expertise. They work with local organizations to meet community needs through the administration of evidence-based programs.

The presentation, which will be broadcast live on YouTube, begins at 6 p.m. and runs for an hour and a half. Registration is required and can be completed here
