OSU Researcher Combining Science, Dance to Speak at Science Pub

Oregon State University doctoral graduate Heather Masson-Forsythe, who won a national contest for communicating her research through dance, will be speaking at OSU’s Science Pub on March 14.

The virtual event organized by both OSU in Corvallis and OSU-Cascades in Bend will be featuring Masson-Forsythe’s presentation, titled, “Investigating how COVID-19 proteins stick to viral RNA and taking research from the lab to the dance floor.”

Masson-Forsythe documented her research project – which was centered on the nucleocapsid protein (N protein) of SARS-CoV-2 – through the social media app, TikTok, in hopes of sharing what life as a scientist researching COVID was like during the pandemic. The project, though, didn’t become a dance until Science Magazine held its 13th annual Dance Your Ph.D. contest – which Masson-Forsythe submitted her video to and won in the new COVID-19 category.

The Science Pub event, which will be live-streamed on YouTube, will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is free to attend. Registration is required and can be completed here. You can learn more about Masson-Forsythe’s work on her website.
