Red Cross Mandates COVID Vaccine

In October, the Red Cross claimed the Oregon vaccine mandate for healthcare workers did not apply to them, as the organization is a charity and not a healthcare facility. However, the Oregon Health Authority disagreed, saying the organization does need to vaccinate because they are drawing blood from and are in direct contact with patients.

According to OPB, the Red Cross has now released a statement updating the public on the matter.

“Over the last several months, as the delta variant emerged across the country, the pandemic continued to evolve in its complexity,” the Red Cross said. “In response to this, federal, state and local vaccination mandates have been implemented as COVID-19 vaccination rates have stalled. Many of these mandates apply to American Red Cross employees and volunteers who are working to deliver our mission in these localities. As a humanitarian organization, we remain dedicated to delivering our lifesaving mission to those in need across the country.”

Red Cross workers will be required to be vaccinated by January 4, but the organization will allow for religious and medical exemptions. This new policy keeps the Red Cross in compliance with the federal vaccine mandate and Oregon Occupational  Safety and Health Administration Standards.

According to the Red Cross, 90% of its Oregon staff are already fully vaccinated, and coronavirus precautions have been in place which has allowed them to continue operating safely.

As we go into the holiday season, we strongly encourage those who can donate blood to do so.
