School Board Holds First Meeting of 2022/23 School Year

In the first Corvallis School District board meeting of the school year — and the first in Corvallis history to be chaired by a Native woman — members elected new officers for 2022/23. Sarah Finger McDonald, who was not present at the meeting, was elected to continue as chair. Luhui Whitebear and Shauna Tominey were elected co-vice chairs.

The board members also approved participation in the Oregon School Boards Association’s Diane Eseaff Memorial Scholarship Application for the fourth year in a row. Corvallis is the longest-running board of the memorial scholarship programs.

They have applied for the half program and plan to use the opportunity to expand community outreach to update school board goals starting in the 2024 school year. There is also a student scholarship attached, worth $2,500 to be distributed to one or more students. Participation in the program costs $1,925 plus travel expenses.

Superintendent Ryan Noss’s contract has been extended one year, through June 2025, after receiving a satisfactory evaluation from the board.

“There is a national shortage of school administrators, and it’s a tumultuous, difficult time to be a superintendent in K-12 education,” according to Vince Adams. “We have probably one of the best superintendents in the state. For five years now, Ryan has performed just admirably, particularly through the pandemic, and this school board and our district and our children are immensely lucky to have Noss’s service and support and leadership.”

There was no public comment.
