On Wednesday, Oct. 6, OSU’s American Strings Series will be launching its new season with an outdoor program featuring indie-folk trio Shook Twins.
The American Strings Series, hosted by OSU Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts, Bob Santelli, brings musicians from all over to Corvallis for an up-close examination of the role that stringed instruments play in American music. Each event includes a conversation and live performance with the invited artists.
This event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Experience Center Plaza on OSU’s campus, between the Memorial Union and the Student Experience Center on Jefferson St. While the show is free and open to the public, there is one rule — face coverings are required.
For those unable to show up in person, the event will be livestreamed on YouTube.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Shook Twins consist of identical twins Katelyn and Laurie Shook, alongside Niko “Slice” Daoussis. The group combines banjo, guitar, beatboxing, vocals, and a wide array of other instruments and sounds.
Their most recent fourth album, “Some Good Lives,” was created as an homage to the most important people in the bands’ lives, ranging from the twins’ late grandfather to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
“Even though our minds are mostly on the women of today and wanting the matriarchy to rise up, we have several men in our lives who have been such positive forces,” said Katelyn Shook. “We wanted to thank them and honor the good guys who showed us the beauty in this crazy world we live in.”
The band has performed in festivals across the States, toured Germany and the UK, and performed alongside Laura Veirs, Mason Jennings, Sarah Jarosz, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Crooked Still. Their debut album, “You Can Have The Rest”, was released in 2007.
While seating in the SEC Plaza is free, it is on a first-come, first-served basis, with campus parking lots restricted before 5 p.m. All future events in the fall series will be livestreamed due to the continuing COVID-19 crisis.
