This February, Take Hazardous Waste Off Your Hands

We know you’ve tossed your old AAA batteries in with the kitchen trash before, and we’ll keep your secret – this time. Next time you won’t have an excuse, because Benton County will be hosting several events with Republic Services this year where households can safely dispose of hazardous materials. And yes, batteries are a hazardous item.

The first of four household hazardous waste events in 2022 will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Republic Services Recycle Depot located on 110 NE Walnut Blvd.

Products with a label that reads toxic, flammable, poison, or anything of that ilk are happily taken off your hands at Republic Services’ event, along with other household waste like light bulbs, antifreeze, oil-filled space heaters, cleaners, and more.

While the event accepts many common hazardous waste items, there are also a variety of things that they will not be able to dispose of. This includes ammunition, fireworks, radiators, biological waste, among others.

Additionally, while this event is specifically for small amounts of household waste, businesses or households that have over five pounds of hazardous materials can make an appointment for Friday, Feb. 11, to dispose of their items. Appointments must be made at least a week in advance and can be set up by contacting Stericycle.

To avoid having to dispose of large amounts of hazardous waste in the future, the Oregon DEQ advises households to give usable, unwanted products to others who will use them, in addition to purchasing safer product alternatives.
