This Saturday in Corvallis, an NAACP Juneteenth Celebration

It’s a free for all Juneteenth Celebration courtesy of the Linn Benton NAACP Branch, let us tell you all about it.

Set for this Saturday, June 20, from 2 to 7 pm at the Corvallis Community Center, 2601 SW Tylor Ave. in Corvallis, this event brings together the community to honor a pivotal moment in American history through activities that are both educational and enjoyable.

Along with delicious food by Smith Catering, great music, dancing, games, activities, book and plant giveaways, there will be a workshop led by keynote speaker Dr. Dana Emerson for parents, caregivers, community members and educators.

Juneteenth, traditionally celebrated on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. It’s a time to acknowledge the history of slavery, honor the resilience of the Black community, and celebrate freedom and equality.

On this day of celebration AND Homecoming

“Be open to learning and correcting misconceptions, even if it’s uncomfortable. Volunteer if invited, but don’t take center stage,” says a release from the NAACP.  “Follow the lead of organizers. Use the day as a chance to discover and support Black-owned restaurants, bookstores, artists, and entrepreneurs. Support organizations working for racial justice, education equity, or criminal justice reform. And of course, all are welcome.”

They also said, “Rain or shine this event is a beautiful celebration of history, community and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and connect with old and new friends.”
