Thursday’s Corvallis Arts Walk, Poetry Meets Music Meets Variety

Of course, poetry figures into this month’s iteration of the Corvallis Arts Walk. It is, after all, National Poetry Month, and we must say the combination of word and image is compelling for us.

Also, in a further sign of spring, more CAW venues are offering music than in recent past. We’re loving that as well – and it does not seem coincidental that Earl Newman, of Monterey Jazz Festival fame, would be showing at the venue topping this month’s list of destinations.

If all this is not enough, there are also healthy dollops of everything from sculpture and faeries to landscape and tattoos and, well, you name it. Set for Thursday, April 16, here’s what’s on deck…

Art in the Valley, 209 SW 2nd Street

Earl Newman: Still Getting Away with It. This exhibit runs April 7 to May 3, featuring silkscreen prints and circular acrylic paintings. Earl, a 96-year-old Summit artist, is best known for designing 50 years of posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival and spending 50 years selling his work at the Oregon Country Fair. Reformation by Kim Smith Claudel. Portland-based artist Kim Smith Claudel returns to Corvallis—where she studied at Oregon State University—with Reformation, a solo exhibition exploring painting as an evolving practice rather than a fixed object. Working across painting, sculpture, and installation, she creates process-driven work that embraces flux, decay, and the everyday, building visual systems that resist completion. In Reformation, Smith Claudel engages The Arts Center’s historic architecture alongside her formative experiences working in the space. The exhibition considers re-forming as both a material transformation and a challenge to the rules we rarely question. Website: The Arts Center‍.

National Poetry Month Celebration. 22nd Annual Art & Poetry Exhibit throughout April and May in an ekphrastic exchange of images and words. In a 1956 speech, JFK famously noted, “if more politicians knew poetry and more poets knew politics, I am convinced the world would be a little better place in which to live”. In 1996 the Academy of American Poets launched an annual celebration of poetry every April. With a creative, academic and diverse community like Corvallis, the Pegasus family and friends jumped in and dedicated themselves to hosting that ritual of ekphrastic exchange. This year many locations in the community will be hosting similar experiences. Jump in! Contact different locations participating in the Corvallis Arts Walk (CAW) and express yourself or just look, listen and contribute your energy. Pegasus says: Art is powerful. Words are powerful. You are powerful.
