The OSU Science Pub event series will host a free, virtual webcast next Monday, June 8 to celebrate World Oceans Day.
The event’s focal point is Heceta Bank—a biodiversity, research, and fishing site located about 35 miles off Cape Perpetua near Yachats. The event listing describes Heceta Bank as “Oregon’s hidden wonder,” adding that “This is a story about one of the least known but most important natural features on the West Coast.”
The webcast will feature a half-hour documentary about Heceta Bank, a short film called “Sense of Place” by Oregon State Productions, and the performance of “Currents”—a piece composed by Dana Reason of the OSU Music Department. Also, on the program is a Q&A/trivia session with a panel of experts, and a special children’s book reading.
World Oceans Day was formerly recognized by the United Nations in 2008. “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean” is the title of this year’s theme. The Science Pub webcast will join the estimated 2,000 events across 150 countries that are expected to be held this year.
The event will run from 6 to 7:30 pm on Facebook Live and YouTube Live. Registration is required and can be completed by following this link.
