You may have noticed some new and returning features at The Advocate lately, which we’ll get to in a minute, but first, a shout to our subscribers and advertisers – your support makes this effort possible. Equally, when the rewrites seem unceasing and the hours get long, knowing you’re there supporting us, helps… Some of you have not only plunked down your dollars, but you’ve sent some deeply touching words too, so thank you; we appreciate you more than you can know.
Now, let’s discuss those features…
Weekly Events Calendar: A returning favorite for readers, now published every Friday, our wide-ranging events calendar still has everything from plays and music and readings, to lectures and protests and local government meetings – there’s even stuff for kids in there, too.
CitySpeak Town Halls: Back after being largely on hiatus over 2021, our CitySpeak town halls have returned as monthly livestreams, with in-person programs coming in the near future… So far this year, we’ve hosted candidate’s debates, looked at our local childcare desert, hosted a public Q&A with Oregon State University’s president and Board Chair, and likewise, hosted city and county officials for State of the City. We’ve talked with local restaurant industry insiders, and later this month, we’ll host a panel centered on going beyond Indigenous land acknowledgement in Corvallis.
Corvallis Business: Published on Mondays, this no-nonsense quick read looks at all that impacts our local business community – city, county and state coverage of trends, happenings and government actions, and a calendar of area events for business people, and the people that care about local businesses.
Corvallis Social Justice: Published on Tuesdays, this column offers both information and calls to action, with an eye to transforming both our shared community and larger society. This empowering column is a pragmatic place to stay informed of important issues and community organizing efforts, discover opportunities for participation, and see what kinds of solidarity and support you may be able to offer your fellow Corvallisites.
Government Affairs Calendar: Also on Tuesdays, a complete listing of all local government meetings, Tuesday-to-Tuesday, with all the access info you’ll need, all in one place. Great option if sussing through our gigantic events calendar seems a little overwhelming.
Corvallis Parents: Published each Thursday, we keep parents informed of all that may impact their families – locally or statewide – and we keep an eye on the local Board of Education. From fun-filled day-trip ideas to state legislation, if you’re a parent, we have you covered.
Family Events Calendar: Also published on Thursdays is, you guessed it, this handy little guide to everything your kiddos may wanna do – and there’s some parents-only events sometimes too. This calendar also covers eight days, Thursday-to-Thursday.
Of course, we’re still bringing you all the local news and features you’ve come to expect from us. And, just this last month, we featured a deep and beautifully written three-part series from Ari Blatt focused on some of Oregon’s endangered invertebrates, and the scientists working to save them. It’s lengthy, and worth the read.
Finally, the part you knew was coming, where we ask you for support. If you’re not currently a subscriber, please consider joining those that are, there are options at $10 and $15 monthly, and for those that can, an option to contribute extra. We are locally owned, and have no stockholders to pay – meaning all your support goes directly into growing deeper hyperlocal journalism for our shared community. Thanks for reading.
