Yesterday, Alexis Hammer announced his candidacy to represent Ward 9 on the Corvallis City Council. If successful, he would replace Councilor Tony Cadena, who will be retiring.
Both Cadena and Mayor Charles Maughan have endorsed him. Councilors Alison Bowden, Jim Moorefield and Carolyn Mayers are also endorsing Hammer’s run. It is a notably wide swath of support, pulling from both flanks of the current City Council. Former City Councilor Andrew Struthers has also given his endorsement.
Professionally, Hammer has worked as a bicycle mechanic, taxi driver, environmental attorney and advocate. He now works on land use policy for the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development, where he servers in a leadership position.
Hammer has been community involved. He serves on Corvallis’ Budget Commission, the Downtown Vitality Taskforce Economic Subcommittee, and is an alumnus of Leadership Corvallis.
In the past, he has also served on the Eugene Sustainability Commission, a Lane Transit District advisory committee, and numerous non-profit boards of directors.
Hammer holds a law degree and a masters in community and regional planning. His campaign plan is simple: he says he will seek to earn the support of voters through a robust effort, listening to the needs of residents, and articulating a clear vision for the future of Corvallis.
During his campaign, Hammer says he plans to knock on every door in Ward 9. Like he said, robust.
If elected, he says he’ll commit to holding monthly opportunities to meet with residents and will make himself available to anyone that wants to bend his ear.
What are Hammer’s aspirations for Corvallis, he says “I believe every Corvallis Resident should have a high quality of life. That means living in a home they can afford. It means everyone can access parks, a vibrant library, and inviting community gathering places. It means a thriving downtown and a strong economy. It also means safe streets for everyone. I will aim to overcome our challenges and discover opportunities through attentive listening and dialogue. I will tirelessly champion our community’s values of inclusivity, fairness, and sustainability.”
