Tuesday’s Benton County Board of Commissioners meeting revealed an important announcement from Republic Services.
Valley Landfills Inc./Republic Services Inc. informed the Board that they were withdrawing their appeal associated with a conditional use permit application for the Coffin Butte landfill that had been denied by the Planning Commission. The withdrawal went into effect on March 11; however, a letter to the Community Development Department shared that Republic Services does intend to file a new application soon and will keep the public informed.
“Coffin Butte landfill is an extremely important asset to our community,” said Board Chair Nancy Wyse. “My fellow commissioners and I were very pleased to hear that Republic is utilizing this opportunity to take more time to reengage with our community to help shape a more constructive path for the future of solid waste.”
The appeal was issued on Dec. 21, 2021, which also requested a 90-day break regarding the land use hearing and appeal process. Prior to its withdrawal, the Community Development Department assumed the process would restart on Monday, March 21.
Before a new application for the permit is submitted, Republic Services is expected to engage with the community via listening and feedback sessions. You can view Board of Commissioner meeting resources here, and listen to meeting recordings here.
